EMERGENCY PREPARATIONS

1.0  WHY?

The “Better Together” planners were surprised to learn that some people asked “WHY?” when the subject came up of plans to include information on the web site about EMERGENCY PREPARATIONS.
Emergencies happen anytime and anywhere; and when they occur, there may not be much time to respond.  A winter storm could confine families to their homes.  Broken water mains have resulted in the loss of drinking water.  Ice storms have led to loss of electricity.  Even more seriously, flood, earthquake, tornado, or some other major disaster could cut off basic services – gas, water, electricity, and telephones for hours, days, or weeks.
After a disaster, local officials and relief workers are expected to be on the scene, but they cannot reach everyone immediately.  The situation when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans LA is evidence that even national organizations can be overburdened during times of disaster.  Everyone should be prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of three days.
This web site area is provided as a way to get the basic information you need to care for yourself and family in the event of an emergency.  It also contains links for more in depth information.
Please give us your feedback and any suggestions you may have to enhance the provided information.

1.1   INTRODUCTION:

This document has been prepared by “Better Together.”  It is presented in four parts: supplies, procedures, references and a printable checklist.  The document is a compilation and reorganization of documents published by the American Red Cross and Homeland Security.  Links to copies of those documents are available on this web site.  You are urged to keep hard copies for your reference as computers may not be available in times of emergency.

Below are the most essential emergency supplies that should be considered first priority. They are also included in section 2.0 as part of the full list of supplies, but are called out here for their importance.

WATER
FOOD
MEDICATION
BLANKETS/SLEEPING BAGS
FLASHLIGHTS (WITH BATTERIES)

2.0 SUPPLIES:

Each of the following items is detailed in the Emergency Preparedness Supply Checklist and Tips. Please click on the individual item for more information.

As you review these categories, keep in mind that the need for each item depends on the type of emergency.  The three emergency locations, home, car, or an evacuation scenario, each require different items.

3.0    TIPS, SUGGESTIONS AND PROCEDURES:

Some tips that fall outside of the items in the Emergency Preparedness Supply Checklist and Tips are as follows:

  • If a hurricane or other severe storm is approaching, it is a good idea to tape all windows such that broken glass will not fly around.
  • It is good idea to tie down or remove all lawn furniture and other outdoor items.
  • Make sure you have a family emergency plan, including where to meet, who to call and who is responsible for what.  Know what to do if family members are separated.
  • Keep the automobile gasoline tank full.
  • Identify a cool dry accessible space in your home, apartment or basement for the storage of supplies. A common area in an apartment building may be available.
  • Face masks are a good item to keep on hand.  They help keep dust out of the lungs and also provide some protection against infection.
  • Any propane appliance, charcoal grill or generator must be properly vented.  DO NOT USE INDOORS.
  • Be sure to know evacuation routes and where they lead.
